Five Spice Mackerel

This Chinese Five Spice Mackerel recipe is simple yet flavorful.


You will need:
  • 2 whole mackerel, (cleaned and head/tail removed)
  • 2 tsp 5 spice powder
  • 1 lime, thinly sliced
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 2 cups stir fry vegetables



  1. Wash and dry mackerel, and make 3 cuts diagonally across each side of the fish, about halfway through.

  2. Rub sesame oil and five spice powder all over the inside and outside of the fish, making sure to get in the cuts of the fish thoroughly as well.

  3. Sprinkle ginger across top of fish.

  4. Inside the fish's cavity, place a few slices of lime and the rest under the fish.

  5. Steam fish for 8-12 minutes and steam vegetable for 5-6 minutes.
